This is a renovation of an existing semi attached dwelling, whereby the existing ground floor footprint was reduced, and more garden space was created. A double volume space was created over the kitchen/dining and the corner was opened up through the provision of glazing to the east and south. The result is a living space that is bathed in natural light, and feels more like a detached house with grand proportions. We are proud of the fact that this has been achieved without increasing the footprint of the dwelling at the ground floor, and with the provision of more deep soil planting areas.

The roof to the back of the house rises to catch the late evening light. This was an important design decision in a south facing semi attached dwelling. The unconventional roof form does capture the attention and curiosity of passers by. Its “raison d’etre” stems from a purely environmental concern in the design.
